For hands, made by hand
Who picks up a SUBAL feels the passion in every detail, and a commitment to uncompromising quality. Only a perfect adaptation to the respective camera is good enough, only the best, flawless material passes our strict, handmade quality control.
With one simple phrase, the outstanding comfort and superiority of a SUBAL is established. Access to the most frequently used controls is made as simple as possible, so your hands never have to leave the shot.
Our history
Inspired by diving pioneer and oceanographer Hans Hass, a tinkering 16-year-old Arnold Stepanek built his first underwater housing in 1952, made of rubber and glass, for his Kodak Retinette camera, and used it in the streams of Steyr for his first black and white recordings.
In 1954 came the first die-cast housing. Five years later, the first single lens reflex, an Edixa reflex, was installed. In 1965 the Edixa gained a 4x filter and Nahlinse revolver, an absolute novelty for SLR underwater photography.
Commercial production of photo and movie packages began in 1969. The SUBAL Austria brand was created in 1977, and for years led the world in housings for Super 8 film cameras.

The team
Every SUBAL housing passes through the same benches, the same hands, and the same checks, from the raw aluminium block to the pressure test.
